Frostie Freeze, Malibu in the late ‘70s.

The 21-foot tall staue was not an unusual sight around southern California at that time. Originally designed to promote body shops and auto parts stores, the “muffler men” were manufactured by a company in Venice beginning in the early 1960s.

The one in Malibu was retooled in 1988 into a guy with a moustache holding a taco.

There’s one in Escondido in San Diego County. The Joor Muffler Man has been at the corner of East Valley Parkway and Juniper for 40 years.
